Traction Neuritis

Traction neuritis is inflammation of a nerve after being stretched. Most commonly affected is the superficial peroneal nerve after an ankle sprain. Symptoms include burning, or sharp, shooting pains along the course of the nerve. Traction neuritis does typically resolve but should be treated early to avoid developing a more severe condition known as Chronic Regional Pain Syndrome. Gentile range of motion exercises and desensitization techniques such as a massage with a warm washcloth can be very helpful. Prescription topical and oral medications can also help relieve symptoms while the nerve recovers.
