Painful Total Ankle
The majority of total ankles are very effective in reducing pain with activities. However some ankles develop pain over time. These are no perfect procedures and it is recommended that if you have a total ankle replacement you should have it screened annually with radiographs.
What are some of the causes of pain?
- Gutter impingement
- Ankle instability
- Stress fracture
- Osteolytic cyst
- Component loosening
Is it OK to just live with the pain?
While some of the pain sources can be monitored and may only become symptomatic with excess activity, pain from infection of component loosening are conditions that can threaten the integrity of the implant. It is recommended sudden and new ankle pains should be evaluated.
