Curley Toe

What Is A Curly Toe?

A curly toe is a toe that is flexed or slightly bent at birth. Most commonly this affects the third and fourth toes and is usually on both feet.

Symptoms

Overlapping toes can result and this may be uncomfortable as you child begins walking and wearing shoes. Irritation of the toes can occur and result in blisters or calluses between toes.

Treatment

In some cases the curly toe can resolve on its own. If the curly toe does not resolve and is painful surgical correction can be performed. This involves a minor procedure where the tendon is released through a very small incision. If your child is old enough to tolerate local anesthesia it can be performed in the office. Otherwise it is usually performed in the operating room.  A dressing is kept on for about a week and then may be removed. Sutures are usually not used.
