Vitamin D, made when your skin is exposed to the sun, is important for keeping your bones strong and your immune system healthy. Due to the lack of sunlight most months, vitamin D deficiency is very common in the Pacific North West. Vitamin D deficiency can make you prone to stress fractures or delay bone healing after a fracture or surgery. Other symptoms of vitamin D deficiency include muscle pain, bone pain, fatigue, and depression.

Good dietary sources of Vitamin D include:

  • Fish, such as: salmon, tuna, mackerel, sardines
  • Egg yolks
  • Vitamin D enriched dairy products such as milk and yogurt

We recommend our adult patients in the PNW take daily supplements of 2,000 IU Vitamin D and 500mg Calcium in addition to dietary sources to keep your bones healthy and prevent stress fractures.
